According to a study published in the journal Nature Medicine, a significant increase in the global cases of diabetes is linked to increased intake of refined rice and wheat, as well as processed red meat, and low consumption of whole grains. It is a known fact that diabetes is associated with a multitude of disorders, including an increased risk of heart attack and stroke, nerve damage, blindness, and renal failure, among others.

The authors of the study revealed that increased consumption of fruit juice and reduced intake of non-starchy vegetables, nuts, or seeds had no significant impact on new cases of the disease. The findings of the study were based on a research model of food consumption in 184 nations between 1990 and 2018.

The results of the study showed that inadequate nutrition caused a greater proportion of overall Type-2 diabetes incidence in males versus women, younger versus older individuals, and urban versus rural populations on a worldwide scale. The study showed that a poor diet contributed to over 14.1 million cases of Type-2 diabetes, representing over 70% of new diagnoses globally.

According to the most recent International Diabetes Federation (IDF) data, the global prevalence of Type-2 diabetes in adults was 536.6 million (10.5%) in 2021, and by 2045, that number will increase to 783.2 million (12.2%) diabetics worldwide. The data from the World Health Organisation estimates that 77 million individuals over the age of 18 in India have diabetes (type 2), and almost 25 million are prediabetic.
